STUDENT FESTIVAL OF FASHION 2011

 PLEASE READ THE RULES CAREFULLY

Following are the rules and conditions of the Festival. Please read them carefully. Note should also be taken of the Judging Criteria and Rules and Conditions to ensure your entry complies with all requirements.

Make sure you enter your outfit in the correct category.

1. Fashion Illustration (Grades 8 – 12)

Draw a design for a fashion garment; render it in full colour using any medium. The theme & garment type is of your choice. Entries will be judged on creativity, accuracy of garment details drawn; use of colour, texture & tone; overall aesthetics and how well a mood or theme is captured. The illustrations must be your own and free hand (tracing of a template is not accepted), presented on A4, good quality, drawing cartridge in portrait format with the front view of the design only (face optional). Drawings must not be mounted. Signatures must be on the back of the work. These can be delivered to Uniforms Mackay, cnr Sydney & Alfred Sts, Mky (opp Fire Station)

2. Out-rage-us (wearable art for grades 8 – 10)

Art that walks while you wear it – can be put together using any materials – sewn, glued or welded – anything goes.

 3. Masks (Grades 8 – 12)

Create a wearable mask or headdress which reflects the theme of this year’s event – ‘Outer Space’. Let it be flamboyant, exciting and wild.  Your entry must stun the audience and judges. Masks must be completely constructed by the artist (including the base) using any medium or combination – papier mâché, paper clay, plaster, fabric, wire, paper pulp, fibreglass etc. Entries will be judged on their overall creativity and originality of design & durability. Models must wear black.

4. Wearable Art (Grades 11 & 12)

This category encourages senior art and design students to demonstrate their creativity and to make a wearable outfit to WOW. There are no restrictions or limitations. Your outfit can be constructed using any medium or combination but it must be exceptional and make a bold statement. Be inspired by current social, political or personal issues or by events such as Mardi Gras. It’s up to you. The overall presentation and creativity of your wearable design will be critical.

5. Guys model T (Grades 8 – 12)

This is a male’s only category.

Guys and fashion --- a conundrum!  Yet the t shirt (the uniform of the hip crowd) offers so much more than fashion.  The ‘T’ more than any other garment is the ultimate form of self expression - so guys if you think you’re funny then make it funny or if you think you can draw then draw it up with some funky lines.  Whatever your thing put it on the t shirt.  This is your opportunity to get your message out there.   Use words and symbols, screen print, etch or draw whatever you fancy to ‘make your mark’.  Get together with a group of mates and show us what you can do with a felt pen and a t shirt!  Do a run and sell them to your friends on the night.

6. Pulp Fiction (Grades 8 -12)

Fashion a wearable work of art using any combination of papers – rice paper, tissue paper, coloured paper, crepe paper, butcher’s paper, newspaper or magazines. Paper can be glued, stitched, wrapped, sculpted, stapled or pinned to invent a wearable fashion piece. Consideration will be given to the overall presentation, audience appeal, creativity, skill, execution of the work & durability.

7. Colour Me Crazy (Grades 11 & 12 only)

Colour Me Crazy and transform an ordinary piece of cloth into something extraordinary. Use a variety of surface design techniques to create your own unique aesthetic. Think creatively, fashion it up into a ‘wearable piece’ either formal or frivolous or somewhere in between; it’s up to you. Be inspired by all things colourful, the little shop in Proserpine that is the inspiration for this category, or the Diwalai festival in India, the Saturday markets in Mackay, the fabric designs of Jimmy Pike, the colours of the western desert, wildflowers or nature. The possibilities are endless.

Surf the web for links to different surface design techniques. You could consider tie dyeing or dye and print, dye and paint or dye and overstitch or dye and appliqué or simply paint.  There is a multitude of possibilities. Whatever surface design technique you use it must suit the finished garment ready to wear.

8. Renew, Recycle, and Reinvent (Grades 8-12)

Save the planet - Be sustainable

Recycle a Vinnies (or any charity shop) find and reconstruct it to create a brand new look.  A receipt and photograph of the original garment must be attached to your application. There are no restrictions; your finished piece can be of any genre or style.  It can be street wear, avant garde, red carpet or wearable art. Consideration will be given to the creativity of the reconstruction as well as at the presentation of the piece.

9. Beach & Resort Wear (Grades 8-12)

Think Majorca, Bondi, the Whitsundays …. summer holidays, sun, surf, sand and hot lazy days without a care and design beach and resort wear to take you through the summer. Make your designs bright or bold but ready to wear and up to the minute. Complete with appropriate accessories. These garments must be sewn.

 10. Street Wear (Grades 8-12)

Design a contemporary but casual, everyday look which reflects your personality and your age and which can be worn down the street, for coffee with friends, or to the movies.

11. Contemporary Adornment (Grades 8 – 12)

Banish Year 4 craft shelf items – no bottle top earring please or ‘can’ related kitsch. This category is for the 21st Century and offers students a whole new realm of artistic possibilities. Mine your imagination instead of the planet for your inspiration and produce ‘art Jewellery’ using entirely alternative materials. Be topical, cutting edge, avant garde or futuristic in your approach. Think Marie Antoinette meets Carmen Miranda, Elizabethan ruffles on a boa constrictor; be inspired by Carnivale or burlesque. The work will be judged on the innovative use of ‘alternative’ materials, the WOW factor and cleverness of design. Be bold and think beyond the square. Models must wear black.

12. Red Carpet (Grades 8-12)

Design and stitch your own red carpet style; suitable for after 5, graduation or evening wear. Make it glamorous and stylish. Be inspired by (but don’t copy) current trends and designs to create a very individual piece.    You could consider a variety of different textile techniques in your work such as, external seams, different colour combinations or textural combinations.  But be creative. Your entry will be judged on its overall presentation and whether it meets the above criteria.  These garments must be sewn.

Fashion Illustration prize to be advised with substantial cash prizes to be won in the other categories.

2 Major Awards  - donated by Bernina Sewing Centre and Whitsunday Office Machines.

These will be decided from the winners of the above categories.
